4 March 2026 — Daily Mass Readings

Wednesday of the 2nd Week of Lent

First Reading
Jeremiah 18:18–20

Jeremiah faces conspiracy despite advocating for the people. His prayer reveals both vulnerability and fidelity. The Catechism teaches that suffering endured in faith can participate in God’s redemptive plan (CCC 1508).
Rather than seeking revenge, the prophet entrusts injustice to God.

This reading speaks to experiences of misunderstanding or opposition — fidelity does not always prevent conflict.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 30(31):5–6,14–16

The Psalm echoes trust under pressure: “Into your hands I commend my spirit.” Confidence in God’s steadfast love stabilises the heart when fear surrounds.

Gospel
Matthew 20:17–28

Jesus’ third Passion prediction underscores intentional sacrifice. He walks toward Jerusalem with clarity. Meanwhile, the request for honour reveals misunderstanding among the disciples.

The Catechism notes that Christ’s mission culminates in self-giving love (CCC 606–609). Authority in His kingdom mirrors this pattern.

Servanthood becomes the defining characteristic of Christian greatness. The Son of Man “came not to be served but to serve.”

Reflection

These readings expose a common tension: suffering versus ambition. Jeremiah experiences opposition; Jesus predicts sacrifice; the disciples seek prestige.

Modern life reflects similar patterns. Success often means recognition, influence, control. Yet Christ overturns the scale. Service, not status, shapes authentic leadership.

Lent invites recalibration. Where self-promotion competes with humility, discipleship chooses service. Where resentment grows, trust steadies the heart.

Jesus does not deny glory — He reveals its path. Resurrection follows surrender.

Spiritual maturity grows when service replaces self-interest.

One line to carry today
Greatness in Christ begins with serving others.
