13 March 2026 — Daily Mass Readings

Friday of the 3rd Week of Lent

First Reading
Hosea 14:2–10

Hosea concludes his prophecy with a powerful invitation to return to God. Israel is encouraged to bring words of repentance rather than sacrifices alone. God promises not condemnation but restoration: “I will heal their disloyalty, I will love them with all my heart.”

The Catechism teaches that conversion involves both turning away from sin and turning toward God’s mercy (CCC 1427–1432). Hosea emphasises that God’s desire is always reconciliation.

The imagery in this passage reflects renewal and flourishing. Israel will bloom like the lily and grow strong like the olive tree. Spiritual return leads to new life.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 80(81):6,8–11,14,17

The Psalm recalls God’s liberation of Israel and His continued invitation to listen. The repeated call to “hear my voice” highlights the relationship between obedience and blessing.

Gospel
Mark 12:28–34

A scribe asks Jesus which commandment is the greatest. Jesus responds with the Shema from Deuteronomy: love God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. He immediately adds the second commandment — love your neighbour as yourself.

The Catechism explains that these two commandments summarise the entire moral law (CCC 2055). Love becomes the principle that unites all other commandments.

The scribe recognises the wisdom of Jesus’ response, noting that love is greater than sacrifices. Jesus affirms him: “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”

Reflection

The readings today reveal a consistent theme: the heart of faith is relationship.

Hosea reminds believers that God longs for return rather than punishment. Even after failure, the invitation to come back remains open.

Jesus then clarifies what faithful living looks like. It is not primarily about external observance but about wholehearted love.

In everyday life, this teaching simplifies spiritual priorities. Loving God shapes prayer, gratitude, and trust. Loving neighbour shapes patience, forgiveness, and compassion.

Lent offers an opportunity to realign life with these two commandments. When love becomes the centre, faith moves closer to the kingdom Jesus describes.

One line to carry today
Love of God and neighbour is the heart of faith.
