16 March 2026 — Daily Mass Readings

Monday of the 4th week of Lent

First Reading
Isaiah 65:17–21

Isaiah presents a vision of renewal: “new heavens and a new earth.” This prophetic promise speaks of God’s power to transform history and restore what has been broken. The sorrow and struggles of the past will no longer dominate memory.

The imagery emphasises stability and flourishing: homes are built and inhabited, vineyards planted and enjoyed. These are signs of peace and security — blessings long desired by the people.

The Catechism teaches that God’s plan ultimately leads toward a renewed creation where justice and peace are fulfilled in Him (CCC 1042–1044).

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 29(30)

The Psalm echoes the theme of transformation: sorrow turns to joy, mourning into dancing. God’s intervention brings restoration and gratitude.

Gospel
John 4:43–54

A royal official approaches Jesus, desperate for help because his son is dying. Jesus challenges the expectation that faith must rely on visible signs. Instead, He simply speaks a word: “Your son will live.”

The father chooses to trust that word immediately. He begins the journey home before seeing any proof. On the way he learns that the child recovered at the very hour Jesus spoke.

The Catechism highlights this pattern of faith — trusting God’s word even when the outcome is not yet visible (CCC 2610).

Reflection

Both readings reveal that God’s work often begins before we recognise it.

Isaiah speaks of a future renewal that God is already preparing. The Gospel shows healing beginning the moment the father trusts Jesus’ word.

Faith is often lived in the space between promise and fulfilment. Trusting God’s word can feel uncertain, yet it is within that trust that new life begins.

Lent becomes a time to rediscover this confidence — believing that God is already at work bringing renewal, even when the result is not yet visible.

One line to carry today
Trust God’s word — it brings life even before we see the outcome.
