Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Lent
First Reading
Deuteronomy 4:1,5–9
Moses calls Israel to listen carefully to the laws and customs given by God. Obedience is presented not as restriction but as a path toward life. By observing these commandments, the people will enter the land promised to them and demonstrate wisdom before other nations.
The Catechism teaches that the moral law expresses God’s wisdom and guides humanity toward authentic freedom (CCC 1950–1953). God’s commandments reveal how life flourishes when lived in harmony with His design.
Moses also emphasises remembrance. The people must not forget the works they have seen. Faith grows when each generation passes on the story of God’s presence and guidance.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 147:12–13,15–16,19–20
Psalm 147 praises God for His providence and His unique relationship with Israel. God’s word sustains creation and reveals divine instruction. The Psalm celebrates the privilege of receiving God’s law and guidance.
Gospel
Matthew 5:17–19
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus clarifies His relationship to the Law and the Prophets. Rather than abolishing them, He brings them to completion. The commandments remain meaningful, yet their ultimate purpose becomes clear in Christ.
The Catechism explains that Jesus fulfils the law by revealing its deepest intention — love expressed through faithful obedience (CCC 577–582). Christ embodies the law perfectly and invites His followers to live it authentically.
Reflection
These readings reveal that God’s commandments are not obstacles but signposts. They guide people toward a life rooted in truth, justice, and relationship with God.
In daily life, rules are often associated with limitation. Yet Scripture presents God’s law as wisdom. When understood properly, it protects dignity and nurtures community.
Jesus’ teaching deepens this perspective. He shifts attention from mere external observance toward the interior transformation of the heart. The law reaches fulfilment when actions flow from love.
Lent becomes an opportunity to revisit these foundations. Rather than focusing only on external discipline, believers are invited to rediscover the purpose behind God’s guidance.
Faithfulness grows when commandments are lived not out of obligation alone, but from a desire to walk closely with God.
