5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading
Isaiah 58:7–10
The prophet links true devotion to justice: feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, and removing oppression allow God’s light to shine through human action.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 111(112):4–9
The just person becomes light in darkness through generosity, integrity, and trust in the Lord.
Second Reading
1 Corinthians 2:1–5
Paul emphasises that Christian faith rests not on persuasive speech but on the power of God revealed in Christ crucified.
Gospel
Matthew 5:13–16
Jesus calls disciples salt of the earth and light of the world, urging visible witness through good works that glorify God.
Reflection
These readings emphasise that authentic faith expresses itself outwardly. Isaiah shows worship and justice cannot be separated; care for the vulnerable reflects God’s own compassion (CCC 2447). Paul reminds believers that faith depends on grace rather than intellectual achievement (CCC 1996). Jesus then calls disciples to visible witness — lives that illuminate others through good works rooted in God (CCC 2044).
Faith therefore becomes credible not through argument alone but through lived charity. When compassion, humility, and trust shape daily life, the Gospel becomes visible without force.
One line to carry today
Let faith be seen through compassion, not just words.
