Wednesday of Week 5 in Ordinary Time

First Reading

1 Kings 10:1–10
The Queen of Sheba visits Solomon, recognising that his wisdom and prosperity reflect God’s blessing and justice.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 36(37):5–6, 30–31, 39–40
The psalm affirms trust in the Lord, highlighting that true wisdom flows from righteousness and faithfulness.

Gospel

Mark 7:14–23
Jesus teaches that impurity originates from the heart rather than external observances, calling for interior conversion.

Reflection

The First Reading highlights wisdom as a divine gift rather than a human achievement. The Catechism teaches that wisdom ultimately leads to knowledge of God and moral discernment (CCC 1831). Jesus deepens this insight by focusing on interior conversion, reminding believers that sin and holiness both originate within the heart (CCC 1853).

Authentic faith therefore involves ongoing inner transformation. External practices support faith, but they cannot replace sincerity, humility, and moral integrity. God works quietly within the heart, shaping wisdom and holiness over time.

One line to carry today

Guard the heart — wisdom and holiness begin there.
