9 January 2026 — Daily Mass Readings

Friday after Epiphany Sunday

First Reading
1 John 5:5–13
Beloved, who can overcome the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? The testimony of God is greater than human testimony, and eternal life is found in the Son. Those who have the Son have life; those who do not have the Son of God do not have life.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 147:12–13, 14–15, 19–20
Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
The psalm expresses praise for God’s care — he strengthens the city, blesses children, sends peace to the earth, and reveals his word to Israel.

Gospel
Luke 5:12–16
While Jesus was in a town, a man with leprosy came to him pleading for cleansing. Jesus stretched out his hand and said, “I am willing. Be clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him. Jesus instructed him to show himself to the priest, and then withdrew to deserted places to pray.

Reflection

Today’s readings invite us to a simple, profound faith.

St John reminds us that belief in Jesus gives victory over the world and opens the door to eternal life. Faith is not abstract — it touches real human need. In the Gospel, a man afflicted by disease makes his need known to Jesus. He does not come with presumption, but with trust. Jesus meets him with mercy, healing what was broken and sending him to witness that mercy to others.

There is a rhythm here: honest need meets compassionate response, and then moves outward to witness. In our own lives, faith may begin in quiet honesty before God — admitting need, longing for wholeness — and finds in Christ both mercy and mission.

A moment of pause
What need are you bringing to Jesus today — and how might you be sent to share his mercy with others?
