13 January 2026 — Daily Mass Readings

Tuesday, Week 1 in Ordinary Time

First Reading
1 Samuel 1:9–20
Hannah, weighed down by grief, prays silently before the Lord. Though misunderstood, she remains truthful and leaves no longer burdened as before. In time, the Lord remembers her, and she bears a son, Samuel.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 1:1–2, 3, 4 and 6
Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.
The psalm reminds us that a life rooted in God bears fruit in its own season.

Gospel
Mark 1:21–28
Jesus teaches in the synagogue with authority. An unclean spirit recognises him, but Jesus commands it to be silent and to leave. The people are astonished, for his authority brings restoration.

Reflection

Today’s readings draw our attention to the meeting point of honest prayer and divine authority.

Hannah does not hide her anguish or attempt to spiritualise it. She brings her grief directly before God, even when it is misunderstood by others. Her prayer is not eloquent — it is real. And before her circumstances change, her inner posture does. She leaves with peace, able to eat, able to continue living. This quiet transformation matters.

In the Gospel, Jesus’ authority is revealed not through argument or display, but through clarity and presence. Disorder is named and commanded to leave. What is broken does not define the person — it is removed so wholeness can return.

A moment of pause
Where do you need God to restore order in you — mind, heart, habits, or relationships — and what would an honest prayer look like today?
